The North Staffordshire Group of the Multiple Sclerosis Society has been a vital part of the local community since 1968 — run entirely by volunteers dedicated to supporting people living with MS and their families.
After a quiet spell during the pandemic, the group relaunched in 2021 and found a new home at The Bridge Centre. According to volunteers, the venue’s excellent disabled access and welcoming atmosphere have made it the perfect base for their monthly sessions.
“The Link Room gives us everything we need — accessible toilets, kitchen facilities, and friendly staff who are always on hand to help,” said Lin Hulme, Activities Volunteer. “There’s a lovely atmosphere in the building, and the free parking makes it easy for everyone to join in.”
The group occasionally hosts larger training sessions and festive gatherings, including a popular Christmas party, with The Bridge Centre’s spacious rooms providing plenty of room for everyone to take part.
Multiple Sclerosis is a degenerative neurological condition affecting around 1 in 400 people in the UK, with approximately 2,250 people living with MS in Staffordshire. The North Staffs group currently has 15 volunteers, many of whom have MS themselves, and they’re already planning ahead for their 60th anniversary in 2028 — with celebrations set to centre around The Bridge Centre.
The group is keen to welcome new volunteers to join their friendly team. Vacancies are currently open for Health and Safety and Fundraising Leads, but anyone able to lend a hand — even for a few hours here and there — would be warmly welcomed.
“We’re always looking for people who want to make a difference,” Lin explained. “Whether it’s helping at events, supporting our coffee mornings, or joining our sponsored walk and wheel, every bit of help counts.”
